The Backend Engineering team is responsible for building out API and backend services that power all Smartpay products and experiences including Checkout, SDK, Merchant and Consumer apps, and internal tools that increase the effectiveness and efficiency of all business operations.

As a founding member of the Engineering team:

• You will own and shape our API and backend services from end to end.
• You will work with Scala in a pure functional programming codebase, running in a cloud native environment.
• You will collaborate closely with Product and UX engineering team on API design and integration.
• You will contribute to planning and technical design. You will identify opportunities to improving our practices, process and quality of our API and services.

We’re looking for someone who:

• has a track record of building API and backend services.
• has experience with functional programming—ideally using Scala—or a strong desire to quickly ramp up on this.
• is customer-obsessed and loves crafting great customer experiences that meet our users’ business objectives, and often exceed their expectations.
• prefers simple solutions over complex ones especially ones that iteratively evolve and scale.
• has the ability to communicate complex ideas clearly, and work effectively in an environment involving different teams and stakeholders.
• has a strong ownership and growth mindset, and understands that winning happens in a goal-focused team of accountable players: you actively look to—and help to—grow and improve, while seeking and providing feedback to that goal.
